Some of the bush tomatoes (determinent) require 9 squares. It is in the book and you will learn everything I did! You will love it and I am so happy you are starting a square foot garden!

WOW!!! You said on one of your postings that you wanted to inspire others….and YOU HAVE! I’ve already started building my beds. I just have a few questions. I’ve bought the SFG book and it’s going to come in the mail shortly. Meantime, does the broccoli or any other plants require more room than 1 square? . Are you following the guidelines in the book or have you made your own improvements? Anything advice? You have an AWESOME GARDEN! (cute kiddos too) Thanks for sharing. – Rebecca

If you are having slug problems, keep your used coffee grounds, if you drink coffee, and spread them over the ground area where you are having slugs. Also you can break up washed egg shells in with the coffee grounds. As an alternative can buy Diatemacious Earth. This is earth with decomposed shells and such. The slugs don’t like anything with relatively sharp edges. They will leave it alone, I have personally used the coffee ground and eggshell method with good results!

The square is 4′ x 4′. In the book “Square Foot Gardening”, it explains the method, the type of soil, etc. It is VERY informative and I highly recommend it. Each line makes a grid within the square and represents on square foot. Most seed packs tell you haow many inches to plant apart and therefore, if your box is measured off, then you can maximize space for planting.

How big is the square? Whats those line in the square for.

I was wondering what state you lived in and how you could grow vegetables in March, I see you are in FL. Your gardens look lovely :)

Hmm I’m glad I only planted 2 squares of beans.

  25. dylan14570 says:

The beans are doing wonderfully! I have been so busy harvesting them, I haven’t had a chance to film! I planted them 9 per square (just like the book says). I have been getting about a half pound to a pound every day or other day. I planted about 8squares, 4 Roma & 4 Blue Lake. I have had beans for about 3 weeks. Once they started coming in, we couldn’t keep up. I just pulled up my “spent” plants yesterday. I now have some more on the way.
