An Experiment in Back Yard Sustainability
Posted by greenthumb in Gardening Videos, tags: garden, gardening, renter, saving, seed, sustainability, sustainablePeak Moment 51: Tour Scott McGuire’s “White Sage Gardens” in the back yard of his rental home — a demonstration site for suburban sustainability. He ponders, “How might a household produce and preserve a significant portion of its own food supply?” Composting, a water-conserving greenhouse, and seed-saving are all facets of this beautiful work in progress. Great interview, one of your best Jan
Actually, I believe he is a Certified Permaculture Designer, AND dusty, I totally GET what your saying. Permaculture is more than the simple 1 sentence answer in this interview.
Here’s from a Wiki:
“…permaculture has become both a design system and a loosely defined philosophy or lifestyle ethic.”
i’m still learning about permaculture but i do not believe his perception about permaculture is correct – where he says it’s for homeowners and its all about planting trees.
I think that it’s a copyrighted term and he can’t use it because he hasnt taken the certification course.
thats how everyone feels that knows the truth
Well said!
US gov=Epic Fail. The government shouldn’t have to tax the hell out of everything to maintain order. They should encourage enterprise and sustainable agriculture, and the good life of community and national strength, not national fear and strangling of agriculture with dead end seed banks.
TAX SLAVERY SUCKS
pleabargain…
Some of what is being said about HR 875 is certainly inaccurate… but the onerous thing about this legislation…
1. It CREATES a new regulatory agency, and “food czar”…
2. It creates new “definitions” which apply directly to common growing inputs (i.e. it classifies ALL seeds as “food”, even those usually used as to grow seedlings…
3. It creates a regulatory scenario, that will pit small farmers into potential legal conflict with an agency with unlimited resources
Have you actually read the bill? It doesn’t say this at all!!
That will make great press! Masses of people being hauled off to jail for growing vegetables in their backyards! Especially now that so many are turning to that as an alternative to a depressed economy. And look at the impact this will have on the seed suppliers and equipment/soil suppliers so happy to see product roll out the door like the Home Depots and Wal-Marts across the country!
michelle obama’s white house organic garden is illegal if HR875 passes. Does she know this or is it just another “Let them eat cake” scenario?
claim you to be a non-combatant terrorist.
A non-combatant terrorist according to HLSecurity is anyone who resists ANY Law of the US. Even a peaceful anti war demonstrator is considered a non-combatant terrorist.
If you are considered a non-combatant terrorist you no longer have a right of Appeal, and you can claim NO Genevra Convention Rights.
This means they can hold you indefinite without trial or right to file Appeal, or request for dismissal.
It also allow them the ability to torture
I just read that Bill over.
I think it really get scary at Section 405 and after when it start talking about the penalties of violation.
Up 1,000,000 in fines can be imposed and up to 5 years imprisonment it a product is misslabeled of altered (that should include GMO’s)
I noticed it said you will can be arrested for violation, and tried in the court (It doesn’t specify what court)
It states you can file an appeal if arrested or given a violation.
Under the HLSecurity laws they could…..
Google HR875
Google: Track Government Bills
Then look up HR875
This is the bill you are talking about. This site shows where they are in the process of getting it passed. Call your representative and tell them NOT TO VOTE FOR THIS BILL! Good luck.
I was told by my brother who lives in South Carolina that the bill against back yard gardens in in the process of being passed. He said it is already passed in Pennsylvania.
The Amish are being forced to register their farms and chip their animals and become government certified farmers which means they will have to grow only approved government seed, use approved fertilizers and modern farming equipment.
They are suing, but their not likely to win. They will have to quit farming.
Please supply evidence of this otherwise it’s mere hearsay.
Please supply evidence of this otherwise it’s mere hearsay.
I’ve been informed by a friend that they have already passes this law in Pennsylvania.
They base the law on contamination control. They only want government approved certified growers so they can ensure “safe food”. free of ecoli or any “natural or unnatural contamination”.
I read the basis of these laws, accessible in the Thomas Congress law Library.
All these laws are done under the guise of public and national safety, so the majority of the people (those who don’t farm) will accept it.
Time to rise up and get everyone to protest to your state legislators! The founding fathers would be aghast!
Heads up!
They are attempting to pass a law in South Carolina against the back yard garden (unless certified)
If caught growing a garden you will be heavily fined and the garden pulled up.
Also the Bush admin. passed a law making it a criminal offence to store more that 3 days worth of food, so much for canning and freezing for winter.
They don’t want us to grow it.
They don’t want us to store it.
whats next?
They won’t let us eat it!
Neither can we own livestock, unless chipped.
Johnny Appleseed.
Excellent helpful input. Thank you. If you feel inclined to watch a more recent program (like on Creating a Home Graywater System), let us know how she does.
With the economic downturn, I think Americans should be looking into ways of making our lives more self-sustainable. Our state of health will improve from eating nutritious food (note: processing of food removes nutrients). We will have a means of educating our youth about biology and ecology as well as revitalizing local communities. I challenge every American, if you don’t have a garden, to start one this spring and if you use pesticide or fertilizer, do some more organic food production
Well she just seems like she is trying a bit to hard to be a “fun” host… have her listen to the NPR broadcasters and how they act when they are interviewing knowledgable people. She does tent to interrupt and try to include her knowledge and the way she delivers it is just darn out of place, and does not flow. It just seems like she wants to be interviewed at times. See 6:46. She is also a bit too eager and excited in the annoying way.
