I’m making garden boxes for a service project at the library in my town, and I have a few questions. First, we planned initially on using pressure treated wood for the boxes. However, we are worried about accidentally getting some with chemicals and things bad for the environment in them. Is there any wood that may be better for a box growing vegetables? Also, we had planned to stain the wood as well. However, these are going outside, and I’m wondering if using wood stain on the boxes will be a good idea/worth going through with. Any help with these questions is appreciated :)

I wondered why you want to use wooden boxes? I admit they probably look more rustic than plastic ones, but you can get plastic in a variety of colours – green, brick, white.
They will retain the moisture better than wood and they won’t degrade as quickly. You won’t have to worry about the best wood to use (a hard wood that is very compact, like oak or perhaps cedar that shouldn’t be varnished or painted; both quite expensive).

If you want the wood look, make frames that you put the plastic ones in to hide them. No contamination that way.

Well, that is the way I see it. Hope someone else can help more if you’re really set on all wood!
    Good luck!
