As far as I’m aware you don’t need any licences to start a garden business in London. Particularly popular garden services include things like maintenance, fencing, paving, tree-pruning etc. I imagine the leafier suburbs, say Richmond, would offer the best opportunity for domestic work. Commercial work is probably more difficult because there a lot of established operations, so you would need to offer competitive terms – ask letting agencies to get on their books or to let their clients know you are available. Of course getting business is always hard. Craigslist is a start. Posting an appealing business offer through letter boxes in good target areas is also likely to bring some enquiries. It is also worth looking out for houses which are clearly not poor, but where they look like they have some need for garden maintenance (e.g. branches too near to windows, tall hedge in need of trimming) why not just knock on the door and ask for the business?
