How do you keep cats from using a garden space as a litter box ?
Posted by greenthumb in Gardening QuestionsI am new to owning cats. I have 2 outdoor cats that are here to keep the mice under control. I live in a wooded area. Don’t fret, they are well fed and taken care of and I keep up with all vaccinations. I am planning on putting in a small terraced garden spot but I know once I till the soil and get seeds in the ground they are going to be using it as a litter box. I was thinking about maybe covering the area with some kind of nylon mesh or netting. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I’m thinking the mesh might be your best bet, unless you can get some ‘cat-away’ spray. =)
Spread cat litter in other areas of the garden or use other methods to attract them away from the area, maybe catnip. Cats do not like acidic fruits like oranges and lemons apparently, so maybe you could put fruit slices nearby to keep them away
I think your on the right track. I have 3 indoor/outdoor cats and none of them have used my garden boxes because I make it uncomfortable to do so. I used a mesh like material and it worked. They don’t like getting their claws stuck. I have also use the spray that was mentioned indoors and it works great. Not sure how well it will work outside but it is worth a shot unless you get a lot of rain, then it would be pointless.
Chicken wire, just bend it at the ends so the cats can’t go under it. they won’t like walking across the top of it. Netting is too flexible.
