no offense. but it’s easier to google or yahoo search gardening and beginners gardening instead of us writing a long litany about it.
or visit your local library they have tons of resources.
also you didn’t specify veggies or flowers.
It’s fun and hard work, and "You reap what you sow".
Plant fruits, veggies and flowers.
Make a Plan.
Have fun, It’s the best "Thinking past-time" there is, enjoy.
Start by having your soil tested at the co operative extension in your area. This will give you and idea on if you need to amend your soil to reap the best results. Google beginner gardening and read. The rewards from your efforts are many. The veggies you grow are ten times better than store bought. Have fun, Enjoy.
Lots of hard rewarding work. It would take a book to tell a beginning gardner everything they need to know. Find someone local and volunteer to work with them in their garden for a season. And then pay attention to everything they say, you’ll learn something every day.
Yes, try books, but don’t be scared to make mistakes. Jump in and see what happens. I gardened for two years before I ever read a book. Trial and error is a good teacher. One thing I learned was that most plants are very resilient and strong. Keep that in mind, but don’t let it make you lazy about my next piece of advice:
On getting the soil ready: make sure the soil is fluffy and well-worked with some soil from Lowe’s, or with compost, and get out ALL of the weeds before you plant anything, it doesn’t matter if it’s flowers or veggies. And, get the ground/soil ready in advance of planting. Don’t get your plant home without having it’s home ready first. You’ll be in a rush to plant and not be as thorough as you should be. Also, be prepared to go to your flower bed/veggie patch every couple of days (everyday in the summer) to pull up weeds.
Here’s something else: you don’t have to spend a lot of money on tools, just make sure the tools you do have are very, very good quality. At the very least, you need a shovel, trowel (or hand shovel) a knee pad or seat, a hand-rake, and pruners. If I think of anything else, I’ll come back and edit. Oh, and 2 buckets.
Remember: earthworms are yours and your plants’ friend! Keep them healthy and they return the favor to your plants.
It is hard work, but its so rewarding it doesn’t feel like it. I hope you enjoy it!
Starting out with container gardens may be a great start for you. They’re portable so if you need to find the right amount of sun you can move it. Containers can also accomodate fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers all in the same container if done correctly.
There’s a great resource that will give you solid advice on how to plant, what type of soil to buy, where to plant the seeds, what to plant together (this alone can save you loads of time) and what not to plant together. It even includes hot tips and Plans so that you can begin starting to plant tommorow if you’re keen.
There’s a lot to learn and if you’re limited in time this would be a super help for you to get started.
Happy Gardening.
